Right Direction: India Sees Surge in Women's Participation in Tech Education

By: WE Staff

India is experiencing a significant increase in women enrolling in technical education programs, with numbers more than doubling in key engineering and STEM fields. This growth is driven by progressive policies, scholarship programs, and cultural attitudes, with initiatives like the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign playing key roles.

India's tech workforce is gaining more women, empowering them, and enhancing its innovation and global competitiveness. This shift promotes diverse perspectives, skills shortages, and gender equality, paving the way for India's future as a global tech leader. According to an Indian educational consultancy, College Vidya, a significant increase has been noticed in women's participation in online technical education from 2019 to 2024. The enrollment of women in B.Tech and MTech programs rose from 4 per cent in 2022 to 10 per cent in 2024. The trend is particularly pronounced in B.Sc and M.Sc programs, where female enrollment doubled to 30 per cent in 2024 from 2019. The study highlights the positive trend in women's education, attributed to improved access to coaching facilities, increased online resources, and a shift in societal attitudes towards women in technology, which has made it easier for them to prepare for entrance exams. The report further mentioned that a significant increase in female participation in technical education was noted specifically in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and West Bengal. Women are showing increased interest in various technical fields, including short-term courses in Data and Artificial Intelligence, and traditional degree programs like B.Tech, M.Tech, B.Sc, and M.Sc have seen increased women's enrollment.

On releasing the report, the COO of College Vidya, Mr. Rohit Gupta mentioned, "The surge in women pursuing technical education is a watershed moment for India. We're witnessing a transformation that goes beyond just numbers - it's about breaking stereotypes and reshaping the future of our tech industry. This trend is not just empowering women but it is also setting the stage for a more diverse and innovative technological landscape in India." He further added, "What's particularly encouraging is the diversity of fields women are entering. From AI and data science to traditional engineering disciplines, women are making their mark across the board. This diversity of interest bodes well for the future of tech innovation in India."

Indian women's participation in online technical education has increased significantly with a 33 per cent increase in enrollments on platforms like Coursera and upGrad. This growth is attributed to the ease of accessing quality education from anywhere, breaking geographical and societal barriers, and the affordability of online courses. The gender gap in STEM courses has narrowed, indicating a potential for a more diverse and innovative tech industry.

Importance of STEM Education for Women

STEM subjects are crucial for Indian women, providing them with opportunities and long-term empowerment. They equip women with skills for high-demand industries like IT, engineering, healthcare, and scientific research. STEAM education breaks traditional stereotypes and contributes to national development. Women with STEM expertise contribute to comprehensive and inclusive innovations, fostering social change and creating equitable communities. In order to encourage more women in STEM fields, introduction of STEM subjects early in school curriculums is a must. Women need to be provided with hands-on activities and offered role models and mentorship. Providing scholarships and financial support to women pursuing STEM education by creating inclusive learning environments can also lead to bright futures.

Indian women in tech have made significant contributions and broken barriers, such as Roshni Nadar Malhotra, Debjani Ghosh, Neha Narkhede, Radhika Ghai Aggarwal, etc. These women have driven growth and innovation in the tech industry, advocating for diversity and inclusion. They have impacted perseverance, innovation, and leadership in the tech industry.
