Chitra, a 2019 batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Madurai Corporation. Taking charge on Monday, she made history as the first woman to hold the position since Madurai became a corporation in 1971. Her appointment marks a significant step for gender representation in public administration, bringing fresh leadership to the city's governance.
Chitra has been appointed the 71st commissioner of Madurai Corporation, replacing C. Dinesh Kumar. He has also been transferred to Krishnagiri district as the new district collector, replacing K. M. Sarayu.
Before her new role, Vijayan served as the additional collector of Dharmapuri district. This appointment follows a series of administrative reshuffles within the corporation.
From June 2023 to February 2024, the corporation had three main different commissioners, leading to frequent leadership changes.
Dinesh Kumar was one of the longest-serving commissioners in recent times, holding the position for nearly a year.
