  • HerMD, a women's health startup, is closing due to industry challenges.
  • Despite expansion and venture funding, it is shutting down by March 21.

HerMD, a Cincinnati-based health care startup specializing in menopause and women’s sexual health, is shutting down due to ongoing challenges within the healthcare industry. The company, which raised millions in venture capital, announced the closure on Feb. 24, telling patients that sustaining the business had become increasingly difficult. The final day of operations will be March 21.

HerMD, founded by women and led by physicians, initially operated two locations in Greater Cincinnati, in Symmes Township and Crescent Springs. Over the years, the company expanded its reach to Greater Indianapolis, Nashville, and New Jersey, with plans to grow into more markets. Despite these efforts, HerMD faced difficulties that proved insurmountable, even with substantial venture funding.

The shutdown reflects broader challenges in the American femtech industry, which focuses on developing technology to address women’s health needs, including reproductive health, menopause, and mental wellness. This sector has attracted significant investment as demand for women-specific health solutions grows. However, for companies like HerMD, the struggle to navigate financial pressures and operational hurdles has proven difficult. While the femtech industry continues to show promise, HerMD’s closure highlights the complex realities faced by startups in this space.
