Can you walk us through your career in logistics? What have been some of the key turning points in your professional journey?

When I started my career, I was unsure of what I wanted to do, trying various jobs like working in a call center, KPO, phone banking, and even applying for bank exams. However, in 2009, I discovered my passion for logistics while working as a receptionist at a logistics company. Intrigued by the challenges of sending cargo internationally, I convinced my superiors to give me a chance to learn and grow in the field. My dedication paid off, leading to a promotion to Operations Manager. Over the years, I gained experience across different aspects of logistics by working at various companies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I realized my potential to start my own business, leading me to establish Venetus Logistics in 2020, followed by Maxim Shipping in 2022, an NVOCC company. To address the global container shortage during the Russia-Ukraine war, I founded Avian General Trading Private Limited, specializing in container trading. With these three companies, I have built a solid foundation in the logistics industry and remain passionate about exploring new opportunities and challenges in this vast field.

What inspired you to start Maxim Shipping? Could you share the concept behind the venture and its main areas of expertise?

I've always had the desire to be an entrepreneur, and logistics has always been my forte. I tried other ventures, like opening a cake shop, but quickly realized that it wasn't for me, as baking was never my skill set. This experience taught me that success comes from doing what you excel at, and for me, that's logistics. With this clarity, I decided to focus entirely on this field and opened Maxim Shipping, which allowed me to expand my expertise in the NVOCC division. My core competence lies in providing door-to-door solutions for my clients, offering a comprehensive package that handles everything from freight forwarding to customs clearance. My clients appreciate the convenience of a one-stop solution where they simply specify the destination, and I ensure their cargo is delivered seamlessly, making Maxim Shipping an integral part of their logistics needs.

Can you share your key responsibilities as the Director at Maxim Shipping? What are your primary focus areas for driving the company's growth?

As the owner of a company, I see my key responsibilities as multifaceted, encompassing everything from ensuring my staff's well-being to adhering to government regulations, managing finances, and promoting the company in the overseas market. I believe that when you start a company, you must be involved in all aspects, from branding to day-to-day operations, and cannot rely solely on others for crucial tasks like finance or compliance. It's essential to be knowledgeable in every department to lead effectively and ensure that no one takes advantage of your position. Creating a positive work environment is also a priority for me; I want my staff to leave work on time and feel happy and valued because their satisfaction directly impacts customer satisfaction. I encourage learning and professional growth, knowing that knowledge in logistics must be constantly refreshed. I aim to create a healthy, motivating atmosphere where employees are eager to work and grow. Ultimately, if my employees are happy, my clients will be too, and the company's success will follow.

"Be prepared for new challenges and always be ready for whatever life throws your way"

What do you consider to be the most significant challenges in your current role? How do you address and overcome these obstacles?

I think many of you might miss this point, but currently, customers are facing significant challenges in logistics. Freight rates have skyrocketed, and there's a severe equipment shortage, particularly at congested ports like Singapore. On top of that, China has dramatically increased rates, offering vessel operators higher payments to secure bookings, which has led to vessels being diverted from India to China. The China-to-US trade is fetching rates of around $16,000, while the India-to-US trade is only about $8,000 to $9,000. As a result, vessel operators are more inclined to divert their vessels, causing numerous blank sailings in India, which has driven up freight rates to $7,000 to $8,000. Initially, after COVID, rates had dropped to as low as $1,400 to $1,800, but due to these crises—China's situation, Singapore's port backlog, and the war—the market has become chaotic. Furthermore, shipping lines have imposed many restrictions like weight limit, imposing surcharges particularly on certain commodities like Agro, chemicals and heavy construction equipment making it difficult to move heavy cargo. The current market is in disarray due to the competition between countries to attract vessels, with each offering higher rates to secure shipments. This has created a challenging environment for both shippers and consignees.

Can you highlight the most important professional milestones you've reached in your career? What has been your key to success over the years?

My official journey has been quite remarkable, going from a receptionist to owning my own company, which is a significant milestone for me. I strongly believe in hard work; there's no shortcut to success. Whether in education or business, hard work is essential. Education, experience, and talent together make a person truly rich. While some may seek temporary solutions or shortcuts, they won't achieve lasting success. It's important to embrace challenges, take the tougher path, and avoid settling into a comfort zone. Many people become satisfied too soon, but true growth comes from continually striving and working hard. Success requires persistence, learning from mistakes, and never giving up. It's all about dedication and honesty in your work, and that’s what leads to lasting success.

How do you see the logistics and supply chain landscape in India evolving in the future? Which industry trends do you believe will have the most significant impact in the near term?

Logistics plays a crucial role, especially in the context of global supply chains and the impact of COVID-19. During the pandemic, while many industries struggled, logistics remained essential, ensuring the delivery of commodities, food, pharmaceuticals, and other crucial goods. This highlighted the importance of logistics, even though it's often overlooked. The pandemic underscored logistics as a vital sector, with its role becoming more prominent in discussions about supply chain management. Despite the general focus on fields like HR and marketing, logistics has a promising future, as it is fundamental to daily operations and international trade. The critical role of logistics in getting products to consumers has become increasingly recognized.
