UPS Chennai Tech Centre to Hire 1000 employees, 30% Women, Elevating Diversity in Logistics

United Parcel Service (UPS) has taken a significant step in its expansion plans within the domestic logistics market by opening a state-of-the-art technology center in Chennai. The center, spanning an impressive 51,000 square feet, was inaugurated on Monday and is set to play a pivotal role in the company's global operations. Bala Subramanian, the Executive Vice President and Chief Digital Officer at UPS, highlighted that this center would function as a crucial hub for managing logistics operational technology and developing IT solutions in alignment with the company's two other global IT centers in Europe and the US.
Speaking about the unique approach, Subramanian emphasized that this isn't an outsourcing model; rather, it's a global development model aimed at enhancing efficiency. The launch of this center signifies UPS's commitment to improving its technology infrastructure and operational capabilities.
One of the key aspects of this initiative is UPS's intention to hire 400 professionals by the end of the year and a total of 1,000 employees within the span of three years. The strategic move to establish a technology center in Chennai aligns with the region's growing status as a logistics hub, boasting strong connectivity through ports and roads. Sriperumbudur, the area around Chennai, is experiencing growth in automobile and electronic manufacturing clusters, as well as logistics and warehousing spaces. The Indian government's proposal to create a multi-modal logistics park (MMLP) near Chennai has further reinforced the attractiveness of the region for UPS.
Acknowledging the talent landscape, Dr. Subramani Ramakrishan, Vice President for UPS Technology Centres and head of India operations, indicated that while India possesses significant IT talent, there's a need for expertise in the logistics domain. To bridge this gap, UPS intends to collaborate with state agencies and academic institutions to develop relevant curricula. An essential aspect of this initiative is the commitment to hiring at least 30% women, a move aimed at fostering gender diversity and inclusion in the industry.
The company's investment plan for the Chennai technology center is substantial, with a commitment of up to $20 million by 2025. This investment will encompass various areas, including real estate development, hiring initiatives, and the creation of essential digital infrastructure. UPS's goal is not only to expand its presence but also to enhance its operational capabilities and technological prowess to better serve its customers.
The technology center's launch was graced by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, underscoring the significance of this initiative for the state. The event marked a crucial milestone for UPS's growth strategy in India and its broader commitment to advancing technology and innovation in the logistics sector.
As UPS makes headway in establishing its technology center in Chennai, the company's focus on hiring, innovation, and efficiency enhancement underscores its determination to strengthen its position in the dynamic and rapidly evolving logistics landscape. With a mission to foster gender diversity and contribute to India's logistics domain, UPS's investment and expansion efforts are poised to leave a lasting impact on the industry and the region as a whole.
