By: WE Staff | Wednesday, 12 July 2023
In a powerful address at the National Seminar on Women Empowerment through Sports, Supreme Court Judge Justice Hima Kohli highlighted the urgent need for policy reforms and a robust mechanism to address gender-based misconduct in the field of sports. Her impassioned speech underscored the importance of creating an inclusive environment that promotes respect, protection, and equal opportunities for women athletes.
Justice Kohli urged the establishment of effective mechanisms to address discrimination, gender-based violence, and harassment within sports. She emphasized the necessity of reporting mechanisms, independent committees, and strict penalties for offenders to ensure the time-bound redressal of such instances. By implementing helplines and independent statutory bodies to investigate complaints, a safe space can be created for women in sports.
The esteemed judge stressed the significance of challenging regressive mindsets and cultural norms that hinder women's aspirations in sports. Justice Kohli called for policy reforms that examine various facets, including equal opportunities, financial backup, and mechanisms for reporting and addressing gender-based misconduct. By doing so, women can pursue their sporting dreams without constraints and reach their full potential.
Equal economic opportunities were another crucial aspect emphasized by Justice Kohli. She advocated for equal pay and endorsement deals for women athletes, recognizing that sports can be a means of economic empowerment. By providing financial stability and contributing to overall economic empowerment, sports can open doors for women to excel and inspire others.
To support women athletes, Justice Kohli highlighted the need for robust infrastructure and expert guidance to nurture talent. She emphasized the importance of investing in an ecosystem that fosters and encourages women's sporting endeavors. Additionally, she called for equal participation of women in sports and bias-free representation in the media, aiming to break down gender stereotypes and provide diverse role models for aspiring athletes.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by Indian women athletes on the international stage, Justice Kohli stressed the importance of recognizing and celebrating their indomitable presence. From cricket to athletics, these women have overcome obstacles to achieve success, and their achievements should be acknowledged and celebrated.
In conclusion, Justice Hima Kohli's address serves as a wake-up call for legal reforms and equal opportunities in the realm of women's sports. Her plea for a robust mechanism to address gender-based misconduct highlights the significance of creating a safe and inclusive environment that fosters respect and protection for women athletes. By challenging regressive mindsets, providing equal economic opportunities, and investing in infrastructure and talent development, we can empower women in sports and pave the way for a more inclusive future.
