Rural Women-led Enterprises should be Provided Comprehensive Support

The World Bank suggests assigning a private sector tag to women-led rural enterprises to enhance their access to credit and contribute to the economy. Supporting women in agriculture, such as the Self-Employed Women's Association, has improved water efficiency and crop yields. Creating a sub-segment within microenterprise lending for growth-oriented, women-led enterprises can encourage commercial banks to extend credit, promoting their development and sustainability. This approach is crucial for addressing climate change and addressing poverty.
The suggestion mentions that the focus should be on providing comprehensive support, including capacity building, network access, and financial resources for microenterprise financing, primarily targeting enterprises with turnovers above Rs 5 crore. It further suggests that India can learn from international best practices, such as Bangladesh's microfinance programs and Africa's innovative digital solutions, to create a robust support system for rural women-led enterprises, ensuring their long-term success and sustainability.
Priority tags for women-led rural enterprises can bridge the gender gap in entrepreneurship, empowering more women to start and grow businesses. This aligns with India's commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment. Supporting women-owned growth enterprises can generate employment opportunities, reversing the decline in female labor force participation in rural India. This approach also enhances social mobility, reduces poverty, and fosters innovation and self-reliance, contributing to poverty alleviation and social development.
