President Murmu approves Uttarakhand UCC Bill 2024

The President of India, Draupadi Murmu approved the Uniform Civil Code Act, or UCC Bill, 2024 on 11 March 2024. It is bound to create a uniform body of personal rules for all Uttarakhand people, regardless of their gender, caste, sexual orientation, or religion. These laws include issues like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and maintenance. This significant law seeks to provide equal rights and obligations for all citizens by standardizing legal laws.
Uttarakhand has created historic achievement being named as the first state in independent India to enact a legislation that recommends common guidelines on these important facets of civil life. In addition to this, this law will address the circumstances like polygamy, polyandry, halala, iddat, and talaq. Indian succession rights differ based on religious beliefs, with Hindu daughters having equal rights on their father's property whereas Muslim daughters share half of their father's property with their brother. The new bill protects the rights of unborn children and both male and female children about their property.
The new law also makes live-in relationship registration mandatory and applies to Uttarakhand residents and outside the state, except for Scheduled Tribes, regardless of religious affiliation, the state is committed to equality, fairness, and harmonization of personal laws that act as evidence towards its goal of Uniform Civil Code.
