By: WE Team | Thursday, 8 June 2023

Power Minister R.K. Singh has called upon women to assume leadership roles in India's renewable energy sector and drive the nation's transition towards a net-zero future. His remarks were made during the "Women in Renewable Energy: A Dialogue on Policy, Technology, Skilling, and Finance" event held in New Delhi on World Environment Day. Singh emphasized the vital contribution women can make in spearheading the green energy revolution, aligning with India's commitment to the Paris Agreement and its fight against climate change.

Singh acknowledged the benefits that decentralized renewable energy schemes can bring to rural women, offering them reliable livelihood opportunities. He also emphasized the significant role women can play in promoting green cooking practices, crucial for achieving net-zero emissions. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy echoed the minister's sentiments, recognizing the power of women's involvement in advancing India's sustainable energy goals.

In a significant announcement, the ministry unveiled plans to acknowledge women's contributions in various categories within the renewable energy sector, including gender diversity, entrepreneurship, and initiatives promoting women's participation through NGOs or civil society organizations. The aim is to inspire greater female engagement and ensure long-term energy security for India.

The event, conducted in collaboration with NRDC India, aimed to glean insights from women leaders in the renewable energy field, highlighting their roles across the entire value chain and exploring ways to enhance India's energy security through increased female participation.

Over 180 stakeholders, representing union ministries, state departments, multilateral organizations, financiers, technology suppliers, think tanks, and beneficiaries, participated in the event. Their diverse involvement underscored the widespread recognition and commitment to empowering women and promoting their active role in India's renewable energy transition.

The call for women to guide the renewable energy revolution is vital in addressing the acute challenge of climate flux. By harnessing the untapped potential of women and providing equal opportunities, India can accelerate its progress toward a sustainable future.

As the nation pursues ambitious renewable energy targets, women's empowerment and leadership become indispensable in transforming the energy landscape. Through initiatives, policy support, and recognition of their contributions, the government and industry stakeholders are taking concrete steps to ensure women are at the forefront of India's green energy revolution.

With the impassioned plea from the Power Minister and the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders, the path toward a cleaner and more sustainable India becomes clearer. Empowering women in the renewable energy sector will not only push economic growth but also construct a greener and more optimistic future for generations to come.
