Annu is a dynamic forward for the Indian junior women’s hockey team. She finds her inspiration in the illustrious journey of former Indian captain Rani. Annu, preparing for the upcoming FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup 2023, shares how Rani's example has been a guiding light during her challenging times.
Annu's journey into hockey began in Sirsa in 2011 when her father, Rajpal, nudged her towards the sport, abandoning her interest in kho kho. Her father, an influential figure in her pursuit, narrated tales of Rani's accomplishments, leaving a lasting impact on Annu. "I was moved by the example she set after hearing about her from my father, and it has motivated me during difficult times ever since," Annu acknowledges.
In 2013, Annu transitioned to SAI Hisar, receiving training under the guidance of Azad Singh. Her stellar performance in the 9th Hockey India Junior Women National Championship 2019 marked a turning point, earning her a place in the juniors’ core group. Notably, Annu played a pivotal role in the Women’s Junior Asia Cup triumph in Kakamigahara, Japan, finishing as the leading scorer with nine goals in five games.
Looking ahead, Annu sets her sights on the Women’s Junior World Cup 2023, scheduled from November 29 to December 10. The Indian team, placed in Pool C, faces Germany, Belgium, and Canada in the competition. Annu emphasizes the team's collective efforts and dedication, focusing on areas of improvement, including regaining possession in forward positions.
As Annu gears up for the World Cup, her commitment echoes not just personal aspirations but a desire to contribute to the nation's pride. An inspiring figure herself, she symbolizes the resilience and determination of women athletes in carving out a niche in the field of sports.
