The Women’s Wing of FFFAI embarked on an insightful journey to explore opportunities and understand challenges along the India-Bangladesh border. Led by Ms. Chaitaly Mehta, Convenor of the Women’s Wing, FFFAI, the delegation aimed to grasp the unique logistics hurdles faced by women professionals and foster new prospects in the sector.
The delegation comprised accomplished industry figures like Philomena Pereira, Phoram Sampat, and more. Their destination was the Petrapole-Benapole border, famed as the largest land customs station in Asia. Managed by the Land Port Authority of India (LPAI), Petrapole offers an ideal setting for this exploratory mission.
A crucial objective of the visit was to differentiate Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) from airports and ports, while also addressing specific challenges faced by women working in logistics. Notably, the Petrapole border has witnessed robust cross-border trade, marked by significant passenger and cargo activity. The introduction of initiatives like the E-Suvidha Portal has streamlined cargo processes, slashing waiting times from weeks to a mere 48 hours. Additionally, ICEGATE has revolutionized documentation, embracing digital efficiency.
The LPAI’s management of Petrapole is particularly noteworthy for its impressive representation of women in the workforce, constituting over 12%. This workforce is primarily concentrated in the Border Security Force (BSF) and Customs, showcasing women's growing prominence in traditionally male-dominated sectors.
The visit uncovered the availability of Plant and Animal Quarantine facilities, in addition to Cold Storage options. A new Passenger Terminal, coupled with the Yatri Subhidha service for international travelers, is in progress, enhancing passenger experiences and convenience.
Amidst the visit's insightful interactions with Customs and BSF officials, the team extended gratitude for the unwavering support provided by the LPAI team. The entire initiative was orchestrated in collaboration with the Calcutta Customs House Agents Association (CCHAA), emphasizing the significance of bolstering women's roles in logistics. This endeavor aligns seamlessly with the World Bank's global efforts to stimulate and amplify women's participation across the logistics landscape.
In essence, the FFFAI Women’s Wing's exploration of the India-Bangladesh border stands as a beacon of empowerment, propelling women forward in the dynamic world of logistics and trade.
