Amidst the global challenge of plastic pollution and economic vulnerability exacerbated by the pandemic, Beiersdorf has embarked on a pioneering venture, introducing the 'Women in Circularity' initiative. This innovative program aims to cultivate a circular economy, particularly in emerging markets, while concurrently supporting over 1,600 women through plastic recycling and employment opportunities.

Valued at INR 990.2 million, the initiative joins forces with four organizations, Green Worms, Delterra, Recycle Up! Ghana, and TakaTaka Solutions, are strategically positioned in regions heavily impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. Through the 'Women in Circularity,' Beiersdorf has allocated 4 million Euros from its COVID-19 Aid Program to foster recycling infrastructure and improve the working conditions of women.

This pioneering endeavour, designed to combat plastic pollution and socioeconomic challenges, focuses its initial phase on Kerala. The initiative aims to establish material recovery and recycling facilities to create gainful employment opportunities for over 500 women hailing from 20 villages.

One of the standout facets of the initiative is the transformative effect it will have on the social stature of women in these regions. Apart from generating employment, 'Women in Circularity' is set to provide healthcare support, and educational resources, and establish a Waste Workers Welfare Fund, ensuring economic security within the local community.

Jean-François Pascal, Beiersdorf's Vice President of Corporate Sustainability, has a focused vision to address the escalating global plastic problem, notably accentuated by the surge in single-use plastics aggravated by the pandemic.

Highlighting the commitment to combat this issue, Luisa Robles Vega, Beiersdorf's Sustainability Manager, emphasizes the plan to significantly expand plastic waste collection and recycling by 15,000 tons annually, thereby aiding female waste collectors.

CEO Jabir Karat of Green Worms underscores the significance of this initiative in empowering women in waste management, offering stability and secure employment opportunities post-pandemic. The 'Women in Circularity' initiative, unfurled across four countries, remains dedicated to environmental sustainability, empowering women, and bolstering waste management practices.

This bold venture not only champions environmental welfare but also addresses women's socio-economic progress, particularly in regions grappling with the repercussions of the pandemic.

By fostering a circular economy and empowering women, Beiersdorf's 'Women in Circularity' stands as a beacon of progress and social transformation, setting a remarkable precedent in the drive for global sustainability.
