Can you give a brief overview of your educational journey in interior design and how your early industry experiences have shaped you as a business leader?

Upon completing my studies at a boarding school, I pursued Interior Design and further refined my expertise under the guidance of a seasoned architect. My fascination with aesthetic beauty was enhanced through my travels, during which I eagerly sought knowledge from anyone willing to share their wisdom. From my mentor to the craftsmen and contractors I worked with, to my business clients and financial advisor, every interaction was a valuable lesson. This passion for learning, combined with my education in Interior Design, has enabled me to establish myself as both a skilled designer and a successful businesswoman.

My early experiences have taught me that one must possess a diverse skill set encompassing knowledge of technology, networking, research, marketing, current events, accounting, and interpersonal skills. Success demands self-sufficiency and the ability to be a 'jack of all trades.' Consistent hard work and a sincere passion for one's craft are also vital components of success. I have come to understand that an individual's passion is reflected in their work, and this drives me to continue pursuing my goals.

What was the driving force behind the creation of Monica Khanna Designs, and what are the critical areas of expertise for the company?

I founded Monica Khanna Designs with the intention of creating stunning homes and having the creative freedom to bring my interior design ideas to fruition. Achieving financial independence and building a successful career were paramount to me, and establishing my own company presented the ideal avenue to accomplish these goals.

Our company, Monica Khanna Designs, specializes in interior and architectural projects that encompass constructing beautiful homes and farmhouses from scratch. We are committed to sustainable design and integrate various eco-friendly elements such as drip irrigation, solar power, water recycling, and rainwater harvesting into our projects. Additionally, we offer a wide range of furniture and accessories sourced from talented designers and manufacturers in India and across the globe. Our team strives to bring our clients' interior design dreams to life, resulting in an exquisite home that is both functional and sustainable.

How do you see the future of the Indian interior design industry? How will Monica Khanna Designs adapt to changes, what challenges do you face in your role and how do you overcome them?

The Indian interior design industry is currently undergoing a significant transformation with the integration of technology, particularly artificial intelligence. This technology is simplifying processes, making them more efficient and secure. At Monica Khanna Designs, we strive to stay ahead of the curve by continuously learning about the latest technological advancements.

To keep pace with the industry's evolution, our approach is to embrace technology and stay updated with new advancements. We recognize the importance of adapting to change and continually improving our processes to provide the best possible service to our clients. Quality control and time management are challenging aspects of the industry, but with years of experience, we have developed effective strategies to overcome these obstacles. Our approach is to address each issue one step at a time, rather than becoming overwhelmed by the overall problem.

How do you balance being an interior designer and entrepreneur? Can you share your notable achievements and success factors?

As an interior designer and entrepreneur, finding the right balance between these roles is a perpetual challenge I continue to face. As a leader, I recognize the importance of maintaining a positive and energized attitude to set the tone for my team. From my experience, humility, positivity, empathy, and a no-nonsense approach are essential to effectively managing both responsibilities. Although it's not always easy, I understand that enjoying what you do allows you to overcome any obstacles that come your way.

Throughout my professional journey, I have accomplished several milestones, including designing two luxury trains, The Palace on Wheels and The Royal Orient, making me the only interior designer in the country to do so. Currently, I'm working on a third one. I have also taken on architectural projects in challenging locations, including a 27-acre site in the midst of the deep MP jungles, where I was the only woman leading a team of 200 men. Despite the obstacles presented by snakes and scorpions, I completed the project. I have worked with a diverse group of clients, ranging from expats and socialites to industrialists, the government, and the corporate sector.

My success mantra has always been to have passion for what I do and continue to learn every day. This dedication and enthusiasm have enabled me to accomplish my milestones and overcome the challenges I've faced.
