Justice R. Banumathi began her legal career in Tamil Nadu, India, elevating to the Madras High Court bench. She ascended to become the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court due to her remarkable record and legal acumen. She was promoted to the Supreme Court in August 2024 which was a significant milestone. After joining the bench at the Supreme Court Justice R. Landmark Verdicts:

The Supreme Court of India presided over by Justice R. Banumathi, issued a firm decision in response to a petition filed by Nirbhaya rape and murder convict Mukesh Kumar Singh. The decision was made public on January 29, 2020. Justice R. Banumathi was one of the three judges on the bench, and they declared that they could not find any reason to overturn their 2017 decision in the Nirbhaya case. The death penalty for all four of the accused in the rape and murder case involving the Nirbhaya gang was upheld by the verdict. The scheduled execution date for the four convicted individuals was February 1, 2020.
