By: WE Staff
Justice Hima Kohli
Justice Hima Kohli was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India in 2021. She is the ninth woman to be promoted to the Indian Supreme Court and the first female Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court. She was a Delhi High Court judge before being appointed to the Supreme Court. She authored several significant orders and rulings while serving on the Delhi High Court, including ones that demanded investigations into the detention of the prisoners who had previously been granted bail, safeguarded the identity of minors facing criminal charges, and provided accommodations to allow visually impaired students to attend government schools.
Landmark Verdicts:
A division bench that included Justice Hima Kohli provided a split verdict in a case involving the termination of a 26-week pregnancy. The case concerned a married couple who were unable to raise their third child for emotional and financial reasons. The woman requested an abortion from the court because her pregnancy was longer than the 24 weeks that the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act allowed for abortions. Justice Kohli refused to allow a woman to terminate her pregnancy, while Justice Nagarathna dismissed the government's appeal.
