National Science Day: Women STEM Leaders Urge Indian Women to Cultivate Scientific Temperament
By: WE Staff
Science is that invisible thread that weaves through every aspect of our lives. From discovery of gravity to artificial intelligence, it drives human progress through innovation and curiosity.
In order to commemorate these wonderful discoveries, National Science Day is celebrated annually on February 28. The day honors the spirit of inquiry and the genius of Indian physicist Sir C.V. Raman, who revolutionized the understanding of light scattering with the Raman Effect.
Science knows no boundaries, and neither do brilliant minds that shape any phenomenon. However, in the real world, women continue to be underrepresented in STEM fields.
Women in STEM fields are essential for India's progress, as science thrives when diverse perspectives come together. However, recent data says, India has a high enrollment rate of women in STEM fields at around 40 per cent, but only 14 per cent of employed professionals are women, a phenomenon known as the "leaky pipeline." Another report says, only 14 per cent of women faculty in STEM in India are women, with only 16.6 per cent across 100 universities. Factors such as societal expectations, stereotypes, lack of mentorship, biases and other hindrances contribute to this underrepresentation.
As we celebrate the spirit of innovation and theory on National Science Day, it is crucial to highlight that irrespective of structural and societal issues, women continue to forge ahead in STEM fields. Amazing STEM icons such as Indian microbiologist & virologist Dr. Gagandeep Kang, former Project Director for Agni-IV missile at DRDO, Dr. Tessy Thomas, Dr. Sunita Sarawagi, computer scientist, Dr. Sudha Bhattacharya, and many more have not only excelled in their respective fields but have also inspired future generations to not let challenges stop them from achieving their dreams.
In keeping with the objective of National Science Day 2025 theme “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for VIKSIT Bharat” and Indian women's progress in STEM fields, the WER team reached out to accomplished women STEM leaders to share their thoughts with us.
