5 Key Indian Government Initiatives Supporting Indian Women Entrepreneurs

By: WE Staff

India's economic landscape is witnessing a dynamic transformation with women entrepreneurs emerging as key contributors to the nation's growth and innovation. However, they face challenges in their path like limited access to capital and mentorship. The Indian government has launched numerous initiatives to combat their hurdles and empower women entrepreneurs in order to create an inclusive business environment. These support mechanisms promote gender equality and contribute to societal prosperity.

The Mahila Udyam Nidhi Scheme and Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) are flagship programs providing financial assistance to women entrepreneurs, mentorship, funding, and networking opportunities. These initiatives aim to break down traditional gender roles and stereotypes, contributing to India's growth story. The success stories of women from underrepresented communities demonstrate the impact of these programs.

The Indian government has launched several initiatives to promote women's entrepreneurship, including the National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD), Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN), and Rashtriya Udyamita Viks Pariyojana (RUVP). These programs have attracted a significant number of women, with 67 per cent participating in the SANKALP Programme and 70 per cent of the beneficiaries in the EDP. Recent stats also show that, in 2023-24, around 22,239 women participated in Skill Stregenthing for Industrial Value Enhancement (STRIVE) whereas, NIESBUD along with the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) trained 28,786 women under PM-JANMAN & 906 women under RUVP.

Deriving from these initiatives and schemes, Women Entrepreneurs Review Magazine has listed 5 prominent government initiatives designed for women entrepreneurs in India aimed at reshaping the entrepreneurial landscape.
