What compelled you to foray into the law industry and specialize as an IP attorney?
My desire to become a lawyer was sparked when I observed my grandfather's legal case during my school years. I used to accompany my grandfather to his lawyer’s office during my school holidays and loved hearing the discussions that struck me as logical and analytical. Love for writing was a plus (I had won regional level writing and essay competitions in school). The emphasis on conducting research, honing writing skills, and arriving at logical conclusions resonated with my interests, motivating me to pursue a legal education at Delhi University. I was introduced to IP in my first job and simply loved learning about brands and licenses. So, after working in India for about 1.5 years, I pursued an LLM in Intellectual Property law in the US in the year 1998. The contemporary curriculum, focusing on new-age issues deepened my passion for the field. Thereafter, I worked in the US for more than one decade and became an equity partner in a prominent New York law firm. As an IP attorney, I am driven by the ever-evolving IP landscape, safeguarding intellectual property, and contributing to the advancement of innovation.
Introduce us to Sujata Chaudhri IP Attorneys. Tell us about the underlying idea behind the venture and its key areas of specialization.
Sujata Chaudhri IP Attorneys embodies a vision that emerged from my return to India in 2011 after an extensive period in the United States. The core idea was to revolutionize the delivery of IP services in India, one that focuses on enhancing the quality of IP legal services while ensuring cost-effectiveness. Our distinctive philosophy centres on a comprehensive approach, delving deep into IP law intricacies, coupled with a thorough understanding of our client's businesses. We aspire to be not just legal advisors but dedicated partners in our client's success stories. Another important focus area is our people’s welfare. We're committed to creating a unique work environment, one that balances our people-centric approach with client interests. The idea is to share our successes with our people because we won’t be successful without them. Our primary areas of specialization include trademark law, copyright law, and design law, with a recent expansion into patent law. Sujata Chaudhri IP Attorneys is dedicated to making a significant impact in the IP field, both for our clients, its people and society at large. I’ve recently started a charitable foundation with the objective of supporting causes such as education, health and our environment
Tell us about the most difficult aspects of being an IP attorney in today’s business climate. What steps do you undertake to overcome these roadblocks?
Navigating the complex landscape of intellectual property law in today's business climate is an endeavour fraught with challenges, yet as a leader in this field, I embrace these hurdles as an integral part of our journey. Maintaining a positive and hopeful outlook is paramount, along with the unwavering commitment to confront challenges head-on.
Government offices often present challenges, characterized by delays and varying approaches to identical issues. This can be perplexing to clients, necessitating clear and thorough explanations. Adapting to evolving legal developments is a daily challenge, but one that I enjoy thouroughly. Intellectual property law is a rapidly changing and dynamic sphere, with the advent of artificial intelligence bringing forth new challenges. As our country grapples with AI-induced issues, our legal framework must evolve to accommodate these transformations.

Throw some light on the most important professional milestones or ‘wins’ that you have achieved over the years.
My professional journey has been marked by significant milestones that have shaped my career. The most pivotal moment was becoming an equity partner in a prestigious New York law firm, a remarkable achievement considering that I am a woman of color. This milestone was a testament to the strong support of my mentors, with whom I've maintained enduring relationships to date. This remains the biggest defining accomplishment of my career.
The second milestone was establishing my firm, where I had a blank canvas to paint as I saw fit—slowly, but surely, I am giving shape, with help from my colleagues, to building an organization that can, hopefully, stand the test of time and outlive me. I’ve always run the firm true to the values I hold dear - fairness, honesty, and ethics. Crafting my path while staying true to these principles has been deeply fulfilling. Of course, I could not have done all this without the undying support of my parents who have stood like pillars beside me and my young daughter who teaches me, every day, to go on!
