Sneha Ramesh: A Crucial Contributor To The Expansion Of One Of The First & Only National Music Magazines In India
Sneha Ramesh
Co-Founder & Content Head, The Score Magazine
Music is an important part of Indian culture. In a recent worldwide study conducted, India ranked 6th in the world for the originality of its music. Many music experts are now looking to India as the next big frontier for the music business because of its largely youthful, quickly rising population- now at 1.3 billion people. For the last several years, the Indian music industry has seen a significant increase in popularity, mostly attributable to the internet exposure it receives. However, the majority of people in our nation are still unaware of these details, making it necessary to create a platform to educate the public about the importance of Indian music and the role it has played in influencing society. As a result, The Score Magazine serves as a bridge between Indians and the global music community.
Sneha is the Content Head of The Score Magazine in addition to being one of the first members of the publication. She has been a part of the organization ever since its early years. The Score Magazine is India's first and only national music magazine, having been published since its inception in 2009.
Engaging in an exclusive interaction with the Women Entrepreneur magazine, Sneha spoke about her professional journey so far.
Take us through the early years of your life. What were some early influences that shaped your interests and life's growth trajectory?
As a graduate of media management, I've had the opportunity to learn about many various aspects of the media industry, including journalism, advertising, public relations, photography, and graphic design. With the experience of having explored everything, it's much better to simplify and establish your own business, as well as to put into practice all that you have learnt in university. Understanding the whole publishing, journalism, content creation, and marketing process were rather simple for me, and I am also aware of the significance and importance of advertisements in magazines, and so on. I also understand the significance of design in making a magazine appear beautiful, and at The Score Magazine, we pay much more attention to every element of the magazine's design component. Because of the lively, dynamic, and youthful atmosphere, it presents to readers, our magazine is very well-liked by the readers.
Journalists captivated me in my youth, and I aspired to work in the field from an early age. However, I was apprehensive about mainstream journalism since so many people already do it. As a result, I came on board with The Score Magazine.
What are the various roles and responsibilities that you shoulder as one of the co-founders & content head of the score magazine?
After a year of The Score Magazine's inception, I joined the team and have since held several roles and duties, culminating in my present position in the company. Additionally, as the magazine's Content Editor, I am responsible for managing the publication's daily operations. The Score Magazine publishes a magazine every month and works with writers that PAN across the country. Everything that is published in the magazine goes through rounds of brainstorming and discussions with our team.
"A successful career will follow a person who can remain true to themselves & continue doing what they excel at"
Moreover, when deciding on the content for each magazine, I get down with the team and first discuss the theme we will be pursuing for that month before building a comprehensive layout. Next, I allocate diverse writers to a variety of topics, and at The Score Magazine, we allow our authors to choose a subject and generate unique ideas.
We publish a wide range of articles, from the cover story to the most recent music business news from across the world, in our magazine.
What are some of the most significant milestones achieved by the magazine under your leadership?
From being a regional publication in Chennai to a national magazine, The Score Magazine has come a long way. We also transitioned from being a music only magazine to a music-and-technology magazine, and we now cover the people who create the music themselves. We have featured some of the most prominent names in the music industry, including Bollywood, South Indian Carnatic musicians, and international artists, to mention a few. The Score Magazine is also the only media company from India to represent the country to cover major trade shows and festivals across the world.
Furthermore, during the pandemic, when the whole industry was experiencing many challenges, we created multiple online properties such as Score Distance Jams, in which we united artists from all over the globe to jam from the comfort of their homes. When the rest of the world slowed down, The Score Magazine remained unaffected. This is a remarkable milestone for us. We took the pandemic as a time to revamp and make a lot of changes in our digital presence and kept doing what we could on our own.
Drawing from your experience as a successful entrepreneur, what would your advice be to young women and girls who also aspire to become business leaders and entrepreneurs in the future?
I would say, 'Just be Yourself', don't attempt to imitate or be someone else. A successful career will follow a person who can remain true to themselves and continue doing what they excel at.
