What key aspects shape your life and professional journey? Share your prior industry experience relevant to your role as an educator.

My life journey has been a blend of simplicity and rich experiences. Raised in a nuclear family with three siblings, my father's profession as a primary school teacher instilled in us a focus on education over luxury. Childhood was a mix of academic pursuit and domestic duties, where I assisted my mother while studying.

My formal education began in grade three, bypassing earlier years due to perceived intelligence. By age 20, I had completed my MSC and embarked on a PhD journey, juggling research and teaching responsibilities. Despite challenges in thesis submission due to age restrictions, I obtained my PhD and began lecturing at SATI College Vidisha, teaching first-year engineering and MSC Applied Chemistry students. Later, I taught at Benazeer College, Bhopal, for a year.

Marriage and motherhood paused my career for 20 years, after which I resumed teaching at Podar International School after relocating to Mumbai in 2009. Joining Podar International School initially as a chemistry teacher, I later served as Acting Coordinator and then Principal for five years before leaving due to circumstances. In 2018, I completed my B.Ed and joined OES International School as Principal in 2019, where I continue to serve.

Introduce us to OES International School. Tell us about the major responsibilities you shoulder as the school’s Principal.

OES International School, Vashi is a well-known institution established in 1992 under the dynamic leadership of Professor Javed Khan, a renowned educationist and former Education Minister. OES comprises 13 institutions, including colleges and high schools. Currently, Humaira Khan serves as the President of the Society, while Waseem Khan, his son, holds the position of General Secretary and Managing Director of OES International School, Vashi. Wasim Khan's forward-looking management style ensures effective school administration. I am privileged to work under his leadership, sharing a vision of providing the best education to our students.

As the Principal of OES International School, Vashi, my role encompasses various aspects of school management, ensuring the well-being of all stakeholders. Responsibilities include handling admissions, organizing vendor meetings, and launching new programs as needed. I also address parent meetings, resolving grievances, and chair the Parent- Teacher Association (PTA) committee. Additionally, I arrange teacher training programs, handle assessments, and prepare curriculum content for school communications such as pamphlets, announcements, and newspaper articles.

What are some pedagogies and teaching methodologies that you leverage to ensure students’ all-round development?

My primary pedagogies focus on holistic development through active learning techniques such as multiple intelligences, Bloom's Taxonomy, and experiential learning. I emphasize practical, application-based studies to engage students kinaesthetically and promote lifelong skills. Additionally, I encourage students to speak about their activities to boost confidence and hone oratory skills. Recognizing the importance of social-emotional skills, I integrate emotional intelligence and social skills into daily practices. I also provide remedial classes for students who need extra support and promote collaborative and inquiry-based learning. Finally, I adapt teaching methodologies to incorporate technology for blended learning approaches.

We Prioritize Application-Based Studies, Connecting Concepts To Real-Life Situations To Enhance Student Engagement

What key challenges do you face as an educator in India? How do you overcome them?

In the context of the NEP, which aligns well with the Cambridge curriculum, pedagogy emphasizes inquiry-based experiential learning and Bloom's Taxonomy. We prioritize application-based studies, connecting concepts to real-life situations to enhance student engagement. From grade three onwards, teachers act as facilitators rather than using traditional didactic methods. Instead of rote learning, we encourage students to understand concepts deeply and express their understanding in their own words. However, some parents request notes for their children, which can lead to rote memorization. We address this challenge through orientation programs to educate parents about the benefits of our pedagogical approach and encourage them to support inquiry-based learning. Additionally, we offer extra classes to support students who may need additional assistance, ensuring that all students can thrive in our learning environment.

What significant milestones have you achieved in your career? What's your success mantra?

Over the years, I've achieved several significant professional milestones. I completed my MSc at the age of 20, making me one of the youngest to do so. Additionally, I hold the distinction of being the youngest PhD holder, overcoming administrative hurdles along the way. Transitioning into roles at SATI Engineering College and later as Principal at Podar International School presented challenges, particularly in earning the respect of colleagues. However, through perseverance, dedication to student welfare, and a commitment to lifelong learning, I successfully navigated these challenges.

One notable achievement was initiating assessments for the first batch of IGCSE. Joining OES International School in 2019, I facilitated rapid growth by adding two classrooms within a year and expanding to include AS levels. My success mantra revolves around embracing continuous learning, acknowledging mistakes, and fostering collective teamwork in leadership.

What advice do you have for aspiring women leaders?

My advice to fellow aspiring women leaders is to prioritize the well-being of children and society in their leadership journey. Cultivate qualities like patience, sincerity, dedication, and hard work. Embrace continuous learning and remain open to learning from everyone around you. Develop resilience to bounce back from challenges, and stay focused on your goals without being swayed by others' opinions. Avoid getting involved in politics and stay true to your mission.
