In an exclusive interview with WOMEN ENTREPRENEUR, Gayathri talks more about her professional journey and how she is achieving sustained success in the industry.
Can You Give Us A Brief Overview About The Inception Story Of Dynamic Engineering?
The company was founded by my father and one of his partners in 1975. After 30 years, the partnership was revoked and my father took over the company. Me and my husband were living in Canada at that time. I joined the company in 2012 and took over the company and as of now 90 percent of our operations are exports with the rest being in the local market.
Can You Talk More About Your Educational And Professional Background? Also, What Motivated You To Pursue A Career In This Industry?
I did Bachelor of Commerce before getting married and moved to Canada where I continued my studies in IT and payroll administration. After which I worked a company in Canada and in that organization, I headed the rewards program and this gave me proper exposure to HR and how to deal with people from different nationalities. As of now, I primarily deal with HR, Export and account related works at Dynamic Engineering. All the previous experience that I had working in multiple facets and levels in the corporate realm helped me to make the transition to Dynamic Engineering much easier.
I am a commerce graduate and my dad is an Engineer. The exposure that I got to both management and engineering from a very young age onwards helped me to venture off into this segment without any major issues. More importantly, I know my strengths and I make sure that every job I do, I put my best foot forward.
What Were Some Of The Major Challenges You Faced And How Did You Overcome Those Challenges?
Challenges are part and parcel for any business leader and especially working in HR and constantly dealing with a diverse set of people brings with its unique sets of challenges. We have to be very thoughtful about how we interact with each individual owing to the fact that all people are different and how to deal with them in the most efficient manner is something that you learn through experience. With that said, one of the most important things that we focus on is the welfare of our employees. We make sure that they are happy, motivated and remains loyal to the company and its objectives. We have created an inclusive work environment where employees feel welcome and at the same time have healthy competitions to improve themselves as well as their colleagues.
"Believe in yourself and be consistent with the work you are putting in to realize those dreams of yours"
I usually put myself in every employee’s shoes and see what their difficulties are. At Dynamic, I encourage women to come forward and work in Engineering Industry. We have 30%women in our workforce. I noticed that most of the women have to wake up early and cook for their family and come to work after their busy schedule at home. Hence, I implemented free lunch scheme for all our employee so that they do not have to carry lunch in the morning. I also provide permission in work hours like to go to their personal banking, doctor’s visit, etc., This way I try to create a good environment to them in a healthy way and they feel at home in organization as they not stressed.
In future, I have many ideas like to implement various welfare schemes like kids care center, etc., to our employees so that we all feel as one family.
Can You Talk More About Your Leadership Philosophy?
As a leader, it is important that you have self-belief and I have always had that. I not only know my strengths but I am also my harshest critique. This kind of attitude helps me to learn constantly and re-invent myself so that I can always remain on top of my game. Even when things around you are moving at a rapid pace, I make sure that sometimes I slow down and this helps me to calm myself, and find my rhythm.
As A Seasoned Veteran, What Would Be Your Advice To The Coming Generation?
Believe in yourself and be consistent with the work you are putting in to realize those dreams of yours. I believe in the law of attraction and for me, taking over the company from my dad as he always wanted me to and leading the business to greater heights have been a dream. I believed in this dream of mine, worked hard and here I am right now.
How Has Been The Support Of Your Family In Your Professional Journey?
I always had support from my parents as well as my husband and this support helped me to run this company. My husband is the biggest motivator for me and he helps me with all the different facets in my life whether it is personal or professional. Then my kids say that they see me as their role model and this is yet another factor that helps me to move forward even in the face of overwhelming challenges.
