The demand for physicians and doctors specialised in all branches are increasing in India due to the growing population and increasing prevalence of diseases. However, the country faces a deliberate shortage of health specialists, including in the basic disciplines such as surgery, gynaecology and paediatrics. Rural and urban health centres are struggling to meet the required number of doctors specialised in each segment due to the shortage in their number. The demand for gynaecologists is rapidly increasing due to the increase in the cases related to the health issues of female. There were 30,000 doctors registered with federation of obstetrics and gynaecological society of India.

Anandibai Joshi is the first Indian lady gynaecologist, graduated in 1886. A century later, women started to outnumber men in the medical field, especially in gynaecology. The trend continues o grow stronger year-over-year. Over the last five years, the number of female medical students passing out from colleges in India were a few thousands (4500 in 2020) more than that of male students. Women constitute 51 percent of the students joining the medical college. Earlier, medicine was regarded as a male dominated field due to long hours of work. Today, women are able to break such social stigma & pressures and are able to break free of all superstitions. Today, about 59 percent of gynaecologists in India are  females.
