The Women's Premier League will debut on March 4 in Mumbai, with Tata Group securing the title rights.
"I am excited to introduce the #TataGroup as the first #WPL's title sponsor. We're optimistic that we can advance women's cricket with their help, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jay Shah, tweeted.
The WPL rights have been obtained by the Tata Group for five years, according to sources in the BCCI, who are also the title sponsor of the men's Indian Premier League. Last year, the Indian Premier League's title sponsor, a multinational company from India, took over for Vivo.
Even if the value of the agreement isn't yet known, having the Tata Group on board as WPL's title sponsor is a big deal. The WPL will be contested in the Brabourne Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
The BCCI was able to sell five franchises to prestigious corporate organizations for a total of Rs 4670 crore after selling the media rights to Viacom18 for a staggering Rs 951 crore.
The league's auctions, which were conducted in Mumbai earlier this month and will feature 22 games for the first three years, attracted a lot of interest from both the players and the business outlets. Smriti Mandhana, the Indian opener, was the most expensive purchase at the auction, costing Rs 3.40 crore.
