Since its establishment in 2012, Women Power Line (WPL) 1090 has processed up to 20 lakh complaints of harassment of women and girls, both offline and online.

“There has been considerable increase in rate of crime against women and more efforts are required to curb them. WPL 1090 has made efforts in this direction. Even UNICEF has praised the agency and given it 98% success,” remarked DGP Mukul Goel, who, on the tenth anniversary of the women and child security group 1090, sponsored a number of community-based awareness programmes linked to women's security.

Goel, together with UPSRTC MD Navdeep Rinwa, waved off LED vans as part of the'safe city' project, with the theme of raising awareness about crimes against women and directing people to phone 1090 for assistance.

He said, “the vans will run for eight hours a day for the promotion of messages around women’s safety”.

Neera Rawat, additional director general of police WPL 1090, stated that a focus has been placed on raising knowledge about 1090 through community engagement.

Rawat said, “we have decided to distribute placards and pamphlets with messages of awareness among village chowkidars, RWAs, youths engaged with NSS, and security guards of offices. If they notice any woman or girl being harassed, they can share this information about 1090 with them”.

The message will also be carried through banners on around 200 UPSRTC buses. These will operate in outlying sections of the state. Furthermore, the information will be included on the tickets.

According to a WPL 1090 official, this was the first time UPSRTC had been enlisted in the cause of women's safety.

All of these initiatives and expansions are part of the state government's Mission Shakti 3.0 programme.
