On Saturday and Sunday, the Jayamahal Palace Hotel in Bengaluru will be the site of the Coffee Santhe organised by the Women's Coffee Alliance-India Chapter (WCAI). The yearly event serves as a fund-raising opportunity for initiatives supporting female child education, women and child healthcare, and traditional and non-traditional coffee-growing regions in India. These initiatives aim to satisfy the mental and physical needs of female coffee plantation workers and their female offspring while also empowering them.
Bengaluru residents and urban environmentalists launched a petition drive on Friday to urge the government to designate the 5,000-acre Hesaraghatta grasslands as a conservation reserve before the State Wildlife Board meeting on November 3. On the first day, the letter already had hundreds of signatures.
The founder of the petition drive, Vijay Nishanth, president of the non-profit Project Vruksha Foundation, stated: "Hesaraghatta, Bengaluru's sole remaining grassland, is the water catchment area of the Arkavathy river, holding over 250 species of birds, insects, and mammals."
As part of the anti-encroachment campaign at Bengaluru's Banaswadi Lake, eight commercial buildings were demolished on Friday. Revenue Department authorities said that the buildings were constructed on the lake bottom. According to organisers, the Thursday-starting effort will last through Saturday. According to a representative of the revenue department, the encroachers were sent notices in 2015.
