Smriti Irani, the Union Minister for Women and Child Development, has stated that India is committed to fulfilling all of its commitments under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, emphasising that women are and will continue to be an integral part of the country's long-term growth strategy.

She stated, “On the one hand, there is a growing recognition of the disproportionate impact that climate change will have on women, while on the other, there is rising awareness of the tremendous social, economic and climate resilient benefits that gender equality and women's empowerment can bring to this segment.”

Irani was speaking at a side event during the 66th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) called "A World We Want: Lifestyle for the Environment."

“India firmly believes in fulfilling all our commitments made under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change," the minister said at the virtual event, noting that the country's per capita carbon footprint is 60% lower than the world average.

Irani remarked that environmental sustainability can only be accomplished through climate justice, and that "we would all agree that successful climate action also needs adequate financing” noting that India enhanced its ambition during COP26 in Glasgow.

She emphasised the importance of working toward the goal of “one Sun one World one Grid” to assure the provision of clean energy from a global grid at all times. “This is the whole of the world holistic approach that India values and stands for.”
