The West Indies team registered a win over Scotland, opening their account in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
The WI team successfully restricted Scotland’s score to 99/8 in the first innings. They went on an offensive and reached their target within 11.4 overs and had six wickets in hand.
WI’s Qiana Joseph scored 31 off 18 balls to give her team a good start. Even after losing four wickets, the WI women played a strong game and scored an easy win over Scotland.
This was an important win for WI after losing their previous match to South Africa. The team’s qualification hopes stay alive for now.
After having faced two consecutive defeats, Scotland is at the very bottom of Group B.
As the match began with some delay owing to the India Pak match running over time, it was Scotland that won the toss and decided to bat first.
Both of Scotland’s openers lost their wickets early. Henry took Sarah Bryce’s wicket while Deandra Dottin caught Saskia Horley’s catch over a ball by captain Hayley Matthews.
Kathryn Bryce (25) and Ailsa Lister (26) built a strong partnership, providing the Scots with some leverage. However, Afy Fletcher took their wickets, bringing their partnership to a halt.
Lorna Jack-Brown scored 11 runs and Darcey Carter remained unbeaten at 14, which helped Scotland take their total to 99. However, the low score put the weight on their bowlers to do some damage control.
In the second innings, Stafanie Taylor opened, but her wicket was taken in the very first over by Rachel Slater. Hayley Matthews was the next key wicket to fall in the powerplay.
But it was Joseph who gave WI the needed push. Her 31 runs off 18 gave WI the control back. Olivia Bell managed to take Joseph’s wicket eventually.
Not letting the momentum down, the WI continued with their attacks and raced to meet their target. Deandra Dottin scored 28 runs off 15 balls and Chinelle Henry scored 18 runs in 10 balls. With this the WI managed an easy win with 8.2 overs to spare.
