In West Bengal, the online cab operators' guild has initiated a 24x7 helpline and a monitored WhatsApp number. This proactive measure aims to address security concerns faced by women working in this male-dominated profession, particularly in light of recent incidents.

The decision to launch these helplines came after a woman cab driver reported an alleged molestation incident by a passenger. The guild intends to offer swift assistance and support to female drivers, particularly when they operate outside the city or encounter situations of potential danger.

Beyond the emergency response aspect, the guild also plans to organize awareness and sensitization programs for registered female cab drivers. These programs are designed to empower women with knowledge about their rights and equip them with effective strategies for responding to challenging situations.

As part of the safety measures, female drivers are encouraged to share their live locations on WhatsApp whenever they feel threatened or when they embark on outstation trips. This location-sharing feature enhances tracking capabilities and ensures that help can be provided promptly when needed.

While the cab driving profession is primarily male-dominated, there has been a recent emergence of female cab drivers. Presently, around 20 women have ventured into this field out of approximately 23,000 app-cab drivers in the city. Initiatives like these are essential in creating a safer environment for women in the profession and fostering an atmosphere where more women are encouraged to join.

Paramita Basu, one of the first female cabbies in the city and the joint secretary of the guild, emphasized that such incidents make female drivers and their families apprehensive. Fear often leads them to reconsider their career choices, and the guild is determined to prevent this from happening. By prioritizing safety, they hope to provide a secure space for their female colleagues and motivate more women to become part of the fleet.

Additionally, the transport department has installed panic buttons in most app cabs, which both passengers and drivers can activate in case of danger. While law enforcement and administrative bodies are making efforts to ensure safety, the guild's initiative underscores their commitment to protecting the well-being of female cab drivers and encouraging more women to pursue careers in the field.

This concerted effort by the West Bengal cab operators' guild reflects a broader societal shift towards recognizing and addressing the unique challenges faced by women in various professions, particularly those traditionally dominated by men. Ultimately, it aims to create a safer and more inclusive environment for all individuals pursuing careers in the cab driving industry.
