Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar signed the Women's Reservation Bill into law on September 28, 2023 marking a major and historic event.
This accomplishment follows the bill's unanimous support and adoption by both houses of Parliament earlier this month during a special session.
The measure, which seeks to provide women a 33% reservation in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures, was approved by the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha with perfect unanimity.
In accordance with Article 111 of the Indian Constitution, the signed bill will now be transmitted to President Droupadi Murmu for her approval.
The results of the upcoming census and the subsequent delimitation process, which will redraw Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies and determine the specific seats reserved for female candidates, will determine how fully this will be implemented, even though it represents an important step toward achieving greater gender representation in Indian politics.
The Vice President's Secretariat posted a photo of Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal accepting the bill from Chairman Dhankhar, signifying the administration's dedication to encouraging women to serve in the nation's legislative bodies. This action is viewed as a major step in the direction of woman equality and empowerment in Indian politics.
