US Consulate General in Hyderabad is committed to women's empowerment

On Friday, the United States Consulate General in Hyderabad held a concluding ceremony for the FirstLeap programme, a six-month series of workshops aimed at improving employability skills, at the Phoenix Arena in Gachibowli. The US Consulate General, Bala Vikasa International Centre, and UMEED collaborated on the initiative.

The programme included 51 final-year female students from Shantiniketan College, who were taught important topics to assist them improve their employability, such as workplace communicative English, digital literacy, self-worth, menstruation health, CV-building, and interview preparation.

When women are economically empowered, they re-invest in their families and communities, creating a multiplier effect that promotes economic progress and contributes to peace and stability, according to David Moyer, Public Affairs Officer, US Consulate General Hyderabad. “This includes promoting opportunities for women to engage in the economy, including as workers and entrepreneurs, while also addressing the broader enabling environment that impacts women’s ability to engage in economic activity,” he said.

Gauri Mahendra, Co-Founder of UMEED, and Shoury Reddy, Executive Director, Bala Vikasa International Centre, also spoke.
