UP Govt Launches Safe City Project for Women's Safety

Uttar Pradesh government has launched a Safe City Project across the state to enhance women’s and girls’ safety. The project will include CCTV surveillance at entry and exit points of 17 municipal corporations. As reported by Hindustan Times, the surveillance will also be extended to government and non-government schools, madrassas, colleges and universities in Gautam Buddha Nagar.

In order to protect women from anti-social elements, various private coaching institutes in the area will be monitored closely. The UP government has also released a host of guidelines to ensure the safety of girls in private coaching institutes. These include prohibition on late evening classes, stated a government release.

For the installation of CCTV cameras, the government has identified 17 municipal corporations and over 2500 schools of Gautam Buddha Nagar. So far CCTVs have been installed in 1692 schools so far. Currently work in underway to instal the remaining CCTVs. Surveillance cameras are being installed in school classrooms, corridors, and entry and exit games.

5505 cameras were installed in 162 higher educational institutions under the Safe City Project. However, the regional office of Lucknow and colleges do not come under the ambit of the project.

Going forward, the installed CCTV cameras will be integrated with the Urban Development Department control room of the city.
