The University of Greenwich has implemented a proactive measure to tackle the gender gap prevalent in STEM fields, with the introduction of scholarships specifically designed for women in these industries. It has been granted funding by the British Council to address the underrepresentation of women in higher education and the research community.
To achieve this goal, the university is offering fully funded MSc scholarships specifically designed for female students from South Asia.
The funding, amounting to £180,000, will support women from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka to pursue their studies and research in STEM subjects in the United Kingdom. This initiative not only aims to bridge the gender gap but also fosters social mobility and empowers women in these countries.
Dr. Ana Paula Palacios, a senior lecturer in statistics at the University of Greenwich, says expressed her pride in this collaborative effort, stating, "We are very proud that in collaboration with the British Council, the University of Greenwich can contribute to address the challenge of gender imbalance and offer women scholars the opportunity to study a STEM subject." Dr. Palacios went on to emphasize the program's alignment with the university's core values of inclusivity, collaboration, and impactfulness.
The Women in STEM scheme aligns closely with the university's core values of inclusivity, collaboration, and impact. By supporting women scholars, the university believes that they will contribute to long-term sustainable growth and make significant advancements in the field of science and technology.
Through this initiative, the University of Greenwich is sending a powerful message: that gender should not limit one's potential in the world of STEM. By creating opportunities and empowering women, the university is taking a step towards a more equitable and diverse future in the field of science and technology and contributing to a larger movement towards gender parity in STEM. These women will not only bring their knowledge and expertise back to their home countries but also act as role models and catalysts for change in their communities.
Through the transformative power of education, the University of Greenwich aims to dismantle the barriers inhibiting women from pursuing their dreams in STEM. By providing invaluable opportunities, they aspire to nurture a new generation of trailblazing women who will shatter glass ceilings, reshape industries, and unleash the boundless potential of science and innovation. Together, they are heralding a wave of change, empowering women and paving the way for a future where gender equality thrives in every facet of STEM.
In the quest for global progress and equality, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has shed light on the underrepresentation of women in the field of STEM. According to UNESCO, women make up less than 30 percent of the global research community, with only a fraction of female students opting for higher education in STEM-related disciplines.
