What a fantastic week for the women. It all started with the news that women had secured the top three positions in UPSC 2021. The news of UPSC 2nd rank holder Ankita Agarwal expressing she wants to work for women's empowerment and primary healthcare was carried on a womenentrepreneur website the next day. In the same week, India's women's hockey team rose to sixth place in the FIH World Hockey Rankings, its highest ever position. This week has seen a slew of such stories, all of which portray women's empowerment. Please take a look at it.
Women secure top 3 ranks in UPSC in 2021
The Union Public Service Commission published the results of the civil services exam 2021, and Shruti Sharma, Ankita Agarwal, and Gamini Singla earned first, second, and third place, respectively.
According to the UPSC, 685 applicants passed the exam. As per the commission, 244 are from the general category, 73 from economically disadvantaged groups, 203 from other backward classes, 105 from scheduled castes, and 60 from scheduled tribes.
UPSC 2nd Rank Holder Ankita Agarwal Wants to Work for Women Empowerment after Joining IAS
Ankita Agarwal, who ranks second in the civil services examination 2021, stated that after entering the Indian Administrative Service, she wants to work for women's empowerment and primary healthcare.
Ms Agarwal, a 2020 batch Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise) officer, is now on probation at Haryana's National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN).
She said, "I am very happy to have got the second rank. I have opted for the IAS and would like to work for women empowerment, primary healthcare and school education sectors after joining the service.”
Indian Women Hockey Team Conquers 6th position in FIH World Ranking
The Indian Women's Hockey team has risen to sixth place in the FIH World Hockey Rankings, which is their highest position ever. With 2029.396 points, the Indian Women's Hockey Team is currently positioned ahead of Spain in the World Rankings.
Spain dropped one spot after losing both of their FIH Hockey Pro League 2021/22 matches to Argentina. They've also lost one match each to Belgium and England this month.
A Woman has Right to Live with her mother's & Mother-in-Law's Houses, says Supreme Court
The Supreme Court stated that a woman has the right to stay in her mother's and mother-in-law's houses and that no one may force her out simply because they don't like her.
A vacation bench comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi and B V Nagarathna made the announcement, "Sending away a woman just because you cannot stand her face will not be allowed by this court. This attitude of throwing out women from their matrimonial homes because of certain matrimonial squabbles is cracking up families.”
However, the bench was not in favour of granting women in married houses unrestricted right of residency. Justice Nagarathna stated, "If she is accused of misbehaving, then conditions can be put by court not to trouble the elders and family members in matrimonial homes.”
Sunita Bottse Appointed as head of Lendleasedata centers in Asia
Australian multinational construction, property, and infrastructure company Lendleasehas appointment SunitaBottse as the head of its data center division in Asia-Pacific.
In her new role Sunita will lead the $1 billion Lendlease Data Centre Partners (LDCP) joint venture, which is currently developing a $600m 120MW hyperscale data center in Greater Tokyo, Japan. The construction of LDCP is all set to begin in June.
Prior to the role leading Lendlease Data Centre Partners, Sunita was the CEO of SuperNAP Thailand, a Tier IV data center developed to the designs of Switch's US SuperNAP facilities, but is an independent business. Earlier Sunita spent four years as VP of LATAM data center business Ctex.
Indian Trio Wins Gold in Women's 10m air rifle at Baku ISSF World Cup
Indian air rifle teambegan their winning streak at the ongoing ISSF World Cup withElavenilValarivan, Ramita and Shreya Agrawal clinching the gold medal in the women's 10m air rifle team competition. ISSF World Cup is currently being held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The Indian trio won the top spot by beating the Denmark team which is represented by Anna Nielsen, Emma Koch and RikkeMaeng Ibsen, 17-5 in the gold medal contest. The bronze medal was won by Poland.
Elavenil who is also former world No 1, along with Ramita, and Shreya had reached the gold medal clash after two rounds of qualification held on Monday. With a combined effort of 944.4 over 90 shots, the Indian team first topped qualification stage among 17 competing teams. India then won the second spot behind Denmark in stage two to enter the title round. The trio shot 628.6 to Denmark's 629.2 after all three team members shot 20-shots each.
Under-20 Women's World Cup to be the First to Feature All-Female Refereeing Teams
FIFA has named an all-female team of 54 officials for this year's Under-20 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica, marking the first time the organization has done so for one of its tournaments.
The games will be overseen by 13 female referees, 27 female assistant referees, and 14 video match officials, with VAR being used for the first time in a FIFA women's youth competition.
FIFA has previously been able to manage a tournament with an all-female refereeing panel, but it has had to rely on male officials to fully staff the VAR hub.
Jasmin B Gupta is Named Co-Founder and CEO of LXME

Gupta will lead the effort to establish India's first women-only neo-bank. “Gupta is an experienced leader with a proven track record of delivering operational excellence in digital banking. Given her rich experience and her personal passion towards financial inclusion and financial literacy for women, I am confident that she will navigate LXME to a high growth journey as we plan to be India’s first digital bank for women. In the next one year, LXME will add more women power for leadership roles,” Priti Rathi Gupta, founder, LXME, states on the appointment.
Girl Empowerment Campaign comes to a close in NTPC Ramagundam
Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM), a four-week program, ended on a high note at NTPC-Ramagundam on Friday. Sunil Kumar, Chief General Manager, NTPC Ramagundam, spoke at the closing ceremony, expressing his optimism that GEM would give a boost to girl empowerment in the district and praising the team for their outstanding efforts in making the event a huge success.
“We take a lot of satisfaction from playing our role in creating ‘gems’ through this well-planned residential programme. They are our future brand ambassadors” He said and praised the children and their parents, who materialized NTPC’s unique idea of GEM.
In truth, the mission had only just begun, and there was still a long way to go in terms of broadening the scope of female empowerment.
