The Week That Was: Indian Women Empowerment News Overview (01- 06 August)

This week marks the release of another compilation of WomenEntrepreneurIndia. This week had a lot of highlights, we'll start with the stories of all the female athletes that represented India and won gold at the Common Wealth Games before moving on to other topics like the agnipath scheme's progress and the Neogrowth Report. CWG 22: Star Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu Bags India's First Gold in Women's 49 KG Category

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu opened India’s gold medal account as she won the first Gold Medal for the country at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in the Women’s 49Kg weightlifting category. The star weightlifter forayed into the competition in the 49kg category after all the other participants had finished their respective Snatch and Clean & Jerk lifts.

She collected a total of 201kg (88kg+113kg) to make her mark in the competition. In the process she also created a Commonwealth Games record. The silver was won by Mauritius’ Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa (172kg) followed by Canada’s Hannah Kaminski (171 kg) who won the bronze.

But Mirabai’strue competition was with herself. Her best Snatch of 88kg was 12kg better than the next best. In terms of C&J her best lift of 113kg was 16kgs better than the next best.

Harjinder Kaur rides her luck to a Bronze Medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games

Weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2022: Despite not lifting her best, Indian weightlifter Harjinder Kaur won the bronze medal in the women's 71 kg division, defeating England's Sarah Davies, who smashed numerous records to win the gold. The 25-year-old from Mehas village near Nabha in Punjab lifted 93 kg in the snatch and 119 kg in the clean and jerk for a subpar total of 212 kg in the competition. At one point, she believed she had missed out on a medal because Alexis Ashworth of Canada, who won the silver medal, lifted her season's best of 123 kg in the clean and jerk to move up to 214 in the standings.

Harjinder was also fortunate since Joy Ogbonne Eze of Nigeria had a washout after three attempts at lifting 125 kg in the clean and jerk. The Indian would have dropped to fourth place if the Nigerian had won since she had lifted 100 kg, seven kilogrammes more than Harjinder.

Amrita Tripathi's stunning victory at this pageant will live in infamy. Amrita's inherent charisma and dignified demeanour during the competition left a lasting impression.

Amrita was seen in the National Costume Round donning a stunning white outfit that stood for harmony, peace in the world, and women's empowerment. Her outfit was exquisitely constructed to look like a bird. The words “Give me wings, let me fly…..Believe in me, let me touch the sky" were written on the costume's elaborately detailed wings. Amrita wanted to use a global platform to deliver a crucial message, and her outfit was an embodiment of her ideas.

India Wins The First-Ever Women's Four-Lawn Bowling Gold Medal

On Day 5 of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, the team of Lovely Choubey, Rupa Rani Tirkey, Pinki, and Nayanmoni Saikia made history by winning the nation's first-ever medal (Gold) in the sport of Lawn Bowls by defeating South Africa (17-10) in the championship match at Victoria Park on Tuesday.

After the team's historic victory over New Zealand, team manager Anju Luthra had said, "Getting a medal is important because when we go back (to India), the federation always says 'what have you done?', so we want to prove that we are not less than any other game.”

The management further stated that it will provide the sport and its participants the recognition they so richly merit. And the occurrences have already begun.

Over 82,000 Women apply for the Indian Navy through the Agnipath Scheme

The Indian Navy received over 80,000 applications from female candidates as the registration for the Senior Secondary Recruit (SSR) and Matric Recruit (MR) concluded on Wednesday (August 3, 2022), according to the officials. The Agnipath scheme will be used to hire the aforementioned profiles.

"Indian Navy`s SSR (Senior Secondary Recruit) & MR (Matric Recruit) registration process towards the #AgnipathRecruitmentScheme has been completed. 9.55 lakh Agniveer applicants including 82,000 women aspirants have registered," tweeted the official handle of Indian Navy.

The Indian Navy announced its intention to hire women sailors on June 20 through the recently unveiled Agnipath recruitment scheme, with a focus on gender-neutrality in all of its branches.

Over 22 percent of Small Firms Receiving Loans in FY22 were run by Women, NeoGrowth Report

According to the annual Social Impact Report by MSME-focused digital lender NeoGrowth, over 22% of small enterprises that received loans in the fiscal year 2022 were owned and operated by women. The report highlighted that loan disbursals to women borrowers have increased exponentially at a compound annual growth rate of 72% since FY 2015, "signifying gender equality," based on a survey of 250 NeoGrowth clients in 7 cities.

NeoGrowth stated that it also supported the government's financial inclusion agenda by providing loans to emerging small businesses that have been operating for less than or equal to five years, at a 60% rate, to young entrepreneurs under the age of 35, at a 36% rate, and at a 38% rate to small-ticket, less than or equal to INR 1olakhs.

In a First, an All-Female Navy Aircrew completes its First Mission in the Arabian Sea

The Indian Navy announced on Thursday that an all-women navy aircrew had "made history" by performing an independent maritime reconnaissance and surveillance mission in the north Arabian Sea on board a Dornier 228 aircraft on Wednesday.

Mission commander and captain Lieutenant Commander Aanchal Sharma, pilots Lieutenant Shivangi and Lieutenant Apurva Gite, tactical officer Lieutenant Pooja Panda, and sensor officer Sub Lieutenant Pooja Shekhawat are the five women that participated in the achievement.

The change occurs at a time when more avenues have opened for women in the military. The Naval Air Enclave in Porbandar is where the five female officers are stationed.
