India's Sahaja Yamalapalli is set to become the country's new No. 1 women's singles player, surpassing Ankita Raina, who has held the position since 2018. Currently ranked 303rd in the Live WTA rankings, Ankita's recent poor performances will likely raise Sahaja in the rankings. Sahaja's impressive progress, starting from No. 1414 three years ago, aims to break into the top 100 singles players globally.
Sahaja is an Indian women's tennis player, who became the third Indian player to win the ITF pro title, clinching the SoCal Pro Series in the US. She also won the ITF W15 USA women's singles title in Los Angeles. Sahaja is financially supported by Techwave Consulting, Lakshya Sports, Bharat Forge, Neeraj Kedia, Subramanyam Reddy, and Prahlad Jain.
23-year-old Sahaja from Hyderabad began her career at Sinnet Tennis Academy in Secunderabad before moving to Sam Houston State University in the US. She made significant contributions to the collegiate tennis circuit, winning the Women's Tennis Player of the Year award in 2019. She is a 2021 US graduate who trains at PBI Bangalore, India, and Ashley Hobson Performance Academy in Florida, U.S., and currently plays at W35 Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.
