- Indian Women make up 25% of Semiconductor Workforce
- Despite, Women hold only 5-7% of Leadership Roles
According to the Teamlease Digital report, Indian women now make up nearly 25 per cent of the semiconductor workforce, up from 20 per cent in 2020. This number could rise to over 30 per cent by 2027.
Companies like Micron and NXP are actively supporting and retaining female employees, with Micron reporting 28 per cent female representation, with 30 per cent representation in the IT department, and NXP training over 100 female engineering students in the VLSI design concepts.
However, the report also says that women hold only 5-7 per cent of leadership roles, despite the significant progress. They frequently face challenges including pay disparities and family commitment issues.
India's goal to become a global electronics hub includes initiatives for female employees, such as the Sriperumbudur industrial housing project in Tamil Nadu which can accommodate 18,720 female workers of Foxconn offering a safer environment. Companies are focusing on career advancement paths, expanding talent pools, and developing a pipeline of senior women leaders while emphasizing employee benefits to retain and support female employees.
The semiconductor workforce comprises engineers, processors, tradespeople, and technicians working in the semiconductor industry. Women are increasingly pursuing STEM education, with representation growing in engineering and R&D roles. However, gender ratios remain skewed due to technical complexity and a male-dominated workforce.
