Green-tech innovator Spowdi and the Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA) have joined forces to promote sustainable smart farming among small-scale women farmers in India. This collaboration comes as part of the Water Drop Initiative phase 2, building upon the success of the first phase. The five-year agreement aims to introduce Smart Farming technology to enhance food production while using minimal water resources.
Small-scale farmers, constituting a significant portion of global agricultural activities, often face challenges due to climate change and water scarcity. The initiative aims to address these challenges by leveraging solar-powered technology that enables efficient water distribution, potentially saving up to 80% of water usage.
SEWA sisters, after receiving specialized training, will become certified Smart Farming entrepreneurs. This training empowers them to manage the last-mile distribution of smart farming technology, contributing to rural development and economic growth. Henrik Johansson, CEO of Spowdi, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with SEWA and recognizing the transformative potential of women farmers as businesswomen and entrepreneurs in the global food production system.
Reemaben Nanavaty, Director of SEWA, highlighted the alignment of the Water Drop Initiative with SEWA's Swacch Aakash Campaign, aiming to create green livelihoods and sustainable practices. This partnership works towards achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, including No Poverty, Zero Hunger, and Gender Equality.
By introducing innovative and sustainable farming practices, Spowdi and SEWA are poised to make a significant impact on the lives of small-scale women farmers, ensuring food security, economic empowerment, and environmental sustainability.
