South Indian women are leading the way in availing loans for street vendors under the Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor's AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM-SVANidhi) scheme. Out of the 3.63 million beneficiaries of the project, a significant 1.50 million are women, accounting for approximately 41% of the total beneficiaries. Southern states such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka have emerged as champions in promoting women street vendors, with higher proportions of women beneficiaries than men.
Andhra Pradesh leads the pack with an impressive 70% of its beneficiaries being women, followed closely by Telangana with 66% women beneficiaries. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have 64% and 50% women beneficiaries, respectively. These states' success can be attributed to factors such as their unique social fabric and matrilineal societies, which create a more supportive environment for women's entrepreneurship.
The empowerment of women street vendors extends beyond South India, as northeastern states like Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim also boast a significant percentage of women beneficiaries. This highlights the widespread impact of the PM-SVANidhi scheme in promoting gender equality and inclusive economic growth across the country.
In North India, BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have witnessed remarkable progress, with women comprising 32% of the beneficiaries in each state. Local authorities' efforts to target women's self-help groups have played a crucial role in increasing women's participation in the scheme, enabling them to assert their economic independence and contribute to their communities development.
Even in states like Bihar and Rajasthan, where women beneficiaries account for 27% and 23% respectively, the PM-SVANidhi scheme has provided a significant platform for women street vendors to thrive. The focus on women's empowerment has driven a positive shift in societal attitudes, breaking barriers and encouraging more women to embrace entrepreneurship and financial independence.
Gujarat and Maharashtra in western India have also witnessed a substantial number of street vendor beneficiaries under the PM-SVANidhi scheme, with women accounting for 42% and 41% respectively. The participation of women in these states has not only contributed to their own economic empowerment but has also had a ripple effect on local economies. The increase in women's purchasing power and financial independence has stimulated other sectors, creating employment opportunities and fostering overall economic growth.
The success of the PM-SVANidhi scheme in empowering women street vendors is a testament to the transformative power of targeted interventions and the promotion of entrepreneurship. By bridging the gender gap in street vending, the scheme has fostered gender equality, paving the way for a more inclusive and prosperous society.
As women continue to assert their entrepreneurial potential, their contribution to the economic growth of their communities and the nation will be instrumental in building a more equitable and progressive India. The PM-SVANidhi scheme stands as a shining example of a women-centred initiative that is making a tangible difference in the lives of countless women street vendors, empowering them to achieve economic independence and participate meaningfully in India's journey towards self-reliance.
