Shelly Oberoi is a 39-year-old member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), is a former visiting faculty member at Delhi University. She joined AAP in 2013 and was appointed as the Vice President of the Mahila Morcha of Delhi two years ago. Today on 22 February 2023, Ms. Shelly has been voted as the new Mayor of Delhi.
She received a total of 150 votes compared to Rekha Gupta, a BJP candidate who received 116 votes. On Shelly's victory, Manish Sisodia, the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi congratulated her for winning the race of mayoral election. He said that "goons lost, the public won."
Ms. Shelly will now take charge of the rest of the polls and be a part of the discussion about the deputy mayor and the remaining six members of the most important standing committee, by the top court's Friday ruling.
The mayoral election was held after three continuous failed attempts and was later ordered by the Supreme Court. After the third failed attempt of electing the mayor of Delhi, she went to court to file a lawsuit. On January 6, the first meeting of the MCD House was held which led to a dispute as lieutenant governor VK Saxena was allocated to give the votes to those members nominated by himself. The 10 aldermen whom Saxena nominated were BJP members.
