A 10-day self-defense program called Tejaswini has been started by the Calcutta Police to teach women's and girls self-defense skills. The females who can enroll themselves will include high school and college students, professionals in the workplace, and also housewives.

For the first stage of the project, a list of 233 upper primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools in Calcutta has been listed. The program will start by next month.

The department of Ananda Parishar has started this program which aims to give students knowledge and abilities beyond the classroom. The Calcutta Police will assist the students with the techniques of self-defense.

On Saturdays, the training sessions will be held for the students of classes 8 to 12, according to an official of the education department. A representative of the Samagra Shiksha Mission said that the Calcutta Police has been chosen for the training because they provide instruction in unarmed combat. The skills will include straightforward but effective moves which will implement knowledge about the process to defend oneself in an attack.

According to a handbook prepared by the department, female students will receive instructions about face punching, back fist punching, reverse punching, hook punching, and round punching. Along with punches, they will be also trained in kicks and blocks.

Meditation and the development of mental toughness will be thought during the sessions. Apart from these, district-level orientation programs will also be organized for the selected institutions and nodal teachers by the Calcutta Police.
