The four Indians on the BBC's '100 Women' list of influential figures of the year are actor-producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas, aeronautical engineer Sirisha Bandla, Booker-winning author Geetanjali Shree, and social worker Sneha Jawale.
The broadcaster uses the annual list to focus on women's experiences around the world through a special series of interviews, documentaries, and features. The list honours the accomplishments of women across the globe, from grassroots activists to global leaders.
The BBC asked some of the previous "100 Women" for the first time this year to suggest women they thought should be included on the list for 2022.
Chopra Jonas is cited as stating, "There's something extremely strong in togetherness. The MeToo movement and the accompanying voices of collective women joining together, safeguarding each other, and standing for one other.
She is referred to as one of Bollywood's top film stars on the list, having appeared in more than 60 films. After making her film debut in 2002, the former Miss World broke through in Hollywood in 2015 when she became the first South Asian actress to take the starring role in an American network drama series, "Quantico." She has appeared in "Isn't It Romantic" and "The Matrix Resurrections" in Hollywood.
"She started her own production company and shoots movies in India. Chopra also serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for Unicef, promoting girls' education and children's rights "the BBC quotes.
Tim Davie, director general of the BBC, said of the women on this year's list, "They are all remarkable in what they have accomplished and what they have contributed to their communities and society, and I am proud that the BBC continues to do vital work by shining a spotlight on them and sharing their stories around the world through our first-class journalism and storytelling."
The BBC World Service and the BBC are each commemorating their 90th and 100th anniversaries, respectively, as the list enters its ninth season.
The season's linked collection of programmes will use the chance to reflect on what has changed over the past ten years as well as to spotlight the amazing women who have made a difference. The subject for "100 Women" in 2022 is progress.
