The government-led Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is an initiative that aims to improve the health of pregnant and lactating mothers. The program also aims to reduce the financial strain that is connected with medical treatment and pharmaceutical costs and also the effects of malnourishment by providing monetary incentives to these women.
The PMMVY scheme provides the following benefits:
- The monetary incentive of Rs 5000 to pregnant and lactating mothers in the form of three installments will be directly transferred to their bank through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) program.
- After registration for pregnancy, the individual will get Rs 1000. The second installment of Rs 2000 will be provided after one antenatal visit during the sixth month of pregnancy. The last installment of Rs 2000 will be provided after the child is born.
- This initiative of PMMVY focuses mainly on those women who work as a daily wager or if she is financially unstable.
- It also aims to reduce the loss of pay during pregnancy and ensures that pregnant women can have access to the necessary medical benefits and treatment during the period.
NOTE: This program does not include women who are involved in any central or state government project. Also, it only benefits those women who are expecting their first child.
Due to this great initiative taken by the Indian government, maternal health in India has significantly improved. It made it easier for those women who are pregnant or lactating to get proper medical care and improve their and their child's health avoiding the negative impacts. They can now take care of themselves without worrying about the expenses due to medical services.
