The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is celebrating its ninth anniversary, having made significant strides in expanding access to banking services and empowering the previously unbanked population. Launched in 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the initiative has not only integrated the underserved into the banking ecosystem but also played a pivotal role in the broader financial architecture of the nation, extending financial inclusion to nearly every adult.
The PMJDY initiative, introduced on August 28, 2014, has been a catalyst for social and economic change, ensuring that the benefits of formal financial services reach the grassroots level. Under this scheme, individuals are offered zero-balance Jan Dhan bank accounts accompanied by debit cards, providing them with essential financial tools. Furthermore, account holders receive guaranteed insurance coverage of up to Rs 1 lakh to address unforeseen contingencies, along with accident insurance of Rs 2 lakhs.
As of August 9, a remarkable 50.09 crore PMJDY accounts have been opened, showcasing the program's monumental impact. Among these accounts, 55.6% are held by women, contributing significantly to gender parity in financial inclusion. Moreover, 66.7% of these accounts are situated in rural and semi-urban areas, highlighting the initiative's reach in underserved regions.
The PMJDY's significance is further highlighted by its role as a foundation for several critical government-driven economic endeavors. From facilitating direct benefit transfers and providing COVID-19 financial assistance to supporting initiatives like PM-Kisan and enhanced wages under MGNREGA, PMJDY's establishment of bank accounts has been the initial step in fostering inclusive economic growth. The government proudly shared that one out of every two accounts opened between March 2014 and March 2020 was a PMJDY account.
During the nationwide lockdown, PMJDY accounts played a crucial role in disbursing financial aid swiftly and efficiently. More than 20 crore women with PMJDY accounts received Rs 500 per month for three months via direct benefit transfers, illustrating the initiative's adaptability to meet unforeseen challenges.
As PMJDY commemorates its ninth year, its enduring impact is undeniable. With millions of previously unbanked individuals now integrated into the formal financial system, the initiative stands as a testament to India's commitment to fostering financial inclusion and empowering its citizens at the grassroots level.
