Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the members of the Varanasi-based organization, Hope Welfare Trust, for their efforts in addressing social issues like drug addiction, superstition, gambling, and the dowry system in villages through their Green Army Initiative, showcasing their inspiring efforts on his X handle. The Green Army, formed in 2015, now has 1,800 women across various districts, including Varanasi, Miarzapur, Sonbhadra, Ayodhya, Firozabad, Ballia, and Jaunpur.
PM Modi mentioned "India is a powerhouse of talent, filled with innumerable inspiring life journeys showcasing innovation and courage. It is a delight to remain connected with many of them through letters. One such effort is the Green Army, whose pioneering work will leave you very inspired." Additionally, Ravi Mishra, the Founder, and President of Hope Welfare Trust mentioned "Receiving appreciation from the PM is a boost to the morale and significant achievement for the Green Army."
Divyanshu Upadhaya, Trust secretary says that the Hope Welfare Trust's Green Army has emerged in Khusiyari village, aiming to free the village from drugs and liquor, motivate people to stop using polythene, and create a long chain of women from nearby villages to fight against evil.
The Green Army, formed by 12 students from Banaras Hindu University and Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, is a group of green-clad individuals who counsel against liquor-drug addiction and encourage women to join the campaign. They also discourage polythene use and promote cleanliness in Khusiyari village, providing essential services like dustbins, sewing machines, toilets, power supplies, tailoring training, and literacy classes.
