The Mahakumbh 2025 is experiencing a significant increase in female participation, with over 40 per cent of attendees being women, particularly young women aged 18-35 attending independently. According to a press release issued by the UP government, the event saw participation from over 55 crore attendees. The record number of women participating in the spiritual event represents an unprecedented shift in gender representation at the world's largest spiritual gathering.
Women are increasingly participating in traditionally male-dominated spiritual and cultural traditions, reshaping their roles in religious practices and reinforcing their place in the broader social and cultural landscape.
The social transformation of Mahakumbh's bathing ghats has been analyzed by a research team led by Professor Badri Narayan and Associate Professor Dr. Archana Singh from the Govind Ballabh Pant Social Science Institute. The team members conducted interviews at Mahakumbh's entry points and bathing ghats to understand devotee behavior and thoughts by discussing various aspects.
The rise of women-only groups visiting the Mahakumbh without male companions is attributed to increased access to education, security, and evolving societal norms. This shift in religious involvement is reshaping women's role in religious traditions and reinforcing their place in the broader social and cultural landscape.
A 17-member research team studying Mahakumbh 2025 found that religious and social institutions are adopting a more open and accepting attitude towards women, leading to greater respect and inclusion. This has increased women's interest in understanding Sanatan Dharma and increased discussions with saints and religious leaders.
