The administration informed Parliament on Monday that more than 1.77 lakh applications from women candidates had been received for admission to the National Defence Academy (NDA).
Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt said in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha that the overall number of applications received was 5,75,856, with 1,77,654 from women.
In an order issued in August, the Supreme Court cleared the door for women to be admitted to the famed military training academy, which had previously been a male stronghold for recruitment into the three services.
The minister stated that the institution has the required infrastructure and facilities for the training of female candidates.
He said, “medical standards have been notified in the UPSC notification. Physical standards will be finalised before commencement of training.”
Bhatt further said, “there were no restrictions on the number of female applicants who could apply for the 2021 National Defence Academy examination.”
In response to a second query, he stated that the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) has been granted for 11 indigenously created systems with a total cost of INR 24,711 crore for introduction into the services.
