The Solid Waste Management Scheme, launched in Gurala Village is a major project which aims to empower women. The government established a self-help group (SHG) which consists of 10 members to collect waste by going door to door in order to empower and make the rural women who come from economically weaker families more independent.
The village panchayat will provide a monthly salary of Rs 3000 to those members who will work in the self-help groups. In addition to that, they will receive a share of the manure made out from the waste. Three out of those ten SHG members will be provided with cycle rickshaws to collect waste from each home. Another team will start digging up holes to bury the waste. Each household needs to pay Rs 50 in return for this project.
The District Development and Panchayat Officer (DDPO), Navdeep Kaur stated that the wet waste will take at least 40 to 45 days to turn into manure. These SHG members would then carry them to the markets and sell them to the farmers.
The DDPO further stated that, in order to provide a platform to sell manure at the camps, discussions are being made with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra and other farmer organizations. The government will be able to carry further this initiative to other villages around the district and even the entire state.
