After serving for nine years, Rekha Sharma has stepped down from the post of Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW). She joined NCW in 2015 and became the chairperson in 2018. She strongly focused on gender sensitization and cyber crime combat. Despite facing criticism, she remained committed to women's rights and empowerment, expressing gratitude for the support and diverse experiences she received. She described her time at NCW as a roller coaster ride filled with achievements and challenges.
Former Chair Rekha actively addressed gender-based violence, women's empowerment, legal reforms, awareness campaigns, and support for victims. She advocated for stronger laws protecting women's rights, launched awareness campaigns, and provided legal aid, counseling, and shelter homes. Rekha Sharma's resignation marks the end of her two-term leadership role at the National Council of Women (NCW), marking a new chapter for the organization. Her departure marks a new era for NCW as they will look for a successor to continue the crucial work she spearheaded. The transition will involve discussions on the organization's future direction and the ongoing challenges facing women's rights in India.
Ms Rekha inaugurated the Digital Shakti Centre, a platform enhancing digital security on Monday, just before her resignation. The centre aims to raise cyber crime awareness, offering legal aid, and psychological support to victims, building on the successful 2018 campaign.
