MoPSW observes International Day for Women in Maritime in New Delhi

International Day for Women in Maritime was observed on 18 May 2024 in New Delhi by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW), emphasizing the significance of women's contributions to maritime safety and security by female seafarers. The theme for this year was, "Safe Horizons: Women in Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety." 27 female seafarers who are pursuing various degrees in the maritime sector from different marine institutes along with certain industry experts were honored during the event for their commitment and exemplary contributions to the maritime industry.
The remarkable female leaders are setting an example for emerging or aspiring women in the marine industry by demonstrating the strength and resilience needed to achieve determined goals in the male-dominated sector. The importance of women in guaranteeing safe operations and preserving lives at sea was underlined by MoPSW Secretary Shri T K Ramachandran. In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5, the event underscored the significance of gender equality in maritime, highlighting MoPSW's commitment to empowering women through initiatives and partnerships with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other stakeholders, and the 140 per cent increase in seafarers over the past nine years. Around 10,440 women seafarers have registered in the industry reflecting an increase of 514 per cent from 2014, stated by the Directorate General of Shipping.
T K Ramachandran mentions, "On this International Day for Women in Maritime, we honor the invaluable contributions of women in the maritime sector. Their dedication and expertise are crucial as we navigate towards a more sustainable and equitable future. We must continue to break down barriers and create opportunities for women in this industry. Together, we can achieve a balanced, diverse, and prosperous maritime community."
