Syria’s new rulers have announced the appointment of Syrian central bank’s former deputy governor Maysaa Sabrine to lead the institution, becoming the first ever woman to do such a position in the history of more than 70 years, as stated by a senior Syrian official.
Armed with over 15 years of experience in the industry, Maysaa is a well-known leader and a longtime central bank official, specifically focused on oversight of the banking sector in the industry. She has done master’s from Damascus University in accounting while also being a certified public accountant.
In addition, she has been a board of directors’ member at Damascus Securities Exchange from the past 6 years now where she represents the central bank. Besides, she has also served in different positions like deputy governor and chief of the Office Control Division at the bank, as stated by the official website of the bank.
Replacing Mohammed Issam Hazime, Maysaa took the position. Additionally, Mohammed Issam was earlier appointed as the governor in 2021 Bashar al-Assad, the then-President, remaining on after al-Assad was overthrown by a Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)-led lightning rebel offensive on December 8, 2024.
